Senior Labour figures have expressed their outrage at NHS Grampian’s decision to downgrade the Maternity Unit at Dr Gray’s Hospital.

NHS Grampian have made the preposterous  claim that downgrading maternity services at Dr Grays and getting women to travel for 90 minutes or more does not put women and their babies at risk – a claim that has been challenged by obstetricians.

Moray Labour Chair Jo Kirby, has condemned the decision as a failure of planning by the health board and the government.

“NHS Grampian state that the downgrade is for patients safety and is down to staff shortages. It’s time for action from NHS Grampian and the Scottish Government.

“We cannot put women and children’s lives at risk this way in the 21st century.

“This is a backwards step and one that could have been avoided with proper planning, training and funding for more staff.

“Women and their families who are about to give birth need reassurances right now from their local Health Board and the Scottish Government that the service they will get at their local hospital will be the best one.”

Labour Leader on the Moray Council, John Divers, expressed his disappointment that both NHS Grampian and Ministers appear to be ignoring public opinion: “it’s frustrating that we have to keep on fighting the same fights over and over again. The people of Moray have told the Scottish Government loud and clear how important the Maternity Unit is, yet Ministers seem unwilling, or unable to listen.”

Moray Labour encourages all local residents to sign the petition to save the Maternity Unit.
