Moray Council has unanimously agreed to a Labour-backed motion calling for further consultation on the introduction of Highly Protected Marine Areas.

HPMAs are proposed areas of the sea which will have strict limits on fishing and aquaculture, with the aim of preserving marine life. However, some fear that without proper consultation, fishing communities may be severely harmed by the introduction of HPMAs.

Scottish Labour councillor Ben Williams (Fochabers-Lhanbryde) seconded a motion at Wednesday’s meeting of Moray Council, which called for further consultation with those communities who are most at risk.

Commenting on the motion, Cllr Williams said:

“Whilst the idea of a Highly Protected Marine Area has merits, and clearly we have to do what we can to ensure the protection of marine life, it would be reckless to do so without proper consultation with our communities.

For hundreds of years, fishing has played an integral role in Moray’s development, and it is only right that those who are involved in the fishing industry are consulted further on plans, so that they can be successful in ensuring that our communities are protected”.
