“I’m standing on a positive platform of supporting our local young people and growing our local economy by investing in education and training.” Catriona McBain
Moray College lecturer Catriona McBain has been selected as Labour’s candidate for the forthcoming Elgin City South by-election.
Ms McBain was confirmed as Labour’s candidate at a meeting of Moray Constituency Labour Party on Tuesday 7 August.
Ms McBain lives on Moss Street and, until recently, was Secretary of the EIS-FELA branch at the College. Ms McBain is due to retire from the College at the end of August after 22 years teaching in the Social Care and Childcare departments.
Commenting on her selection, Ms McBain said:
“Standing for elected office was not part of my retirement plans. Having organised the campaign against cuts to budgets, jobs, and courses at UHI Moray I was positively impressed by the support we received from the local Labour Party – which led me to join.
“When this by-election came up in Elgin South I was approached by a number of people to put my name forward, and I am honoured to have been selected by local members to fight this election in the area in which I live.
“The recent general election has shown that Scotland is scunnered with the SNP and that voters see Labour as the best chance for change. Elgin has a consistent record of electing Labour councillors stretching back over 40 years. We think we have a real chance of gaining another Labour seat on the Moray Council in this by-election, which will send a clear message to the Scottish Government: we’ve had enough.
“I’m standing on a positive platform of supporting our local young people and growing our local economy by investing in education and training.”
“I am incredibly pleased we have Catriona standing in this by-election. She has been a brilliant campaigner against cuts at the College, and she will be a brilliant advocate for the people of Elgin South." Councillor John Divers
Councillor John Divers, Labour’s incumbent councillor in Elgin City South, welcomed Ms McBain’s selection:
“I am incredibly pleased we have Catriona standing in this by-election. She has been a brilliant campaigner against cuts at the College, and she will be a brilliant advocate for the people of Elgin South.
“Given that the Tories came third in this ward last time, the voters here have a simple choice: an SNP candidate who only wants to defend the incompetent and unprincipled Scottish Government; or a Labour councillor who will stand up for Elgin South, Elgin, and Moray, in the very best tradition of the Labour movement.”
