Moray Labour welcomes today’s decision of the Supreme Court on the SNP’s proposed referendum bill.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, the Supreme Court has reached the blindingly obvious conclusion that the Scotland Act’s prohibition on legislation on “The Union” includes legislation to break up the union. We welcome the end to this desperate attempt by Nicola Sturgeon to placate her fundamentalist supporters and distract from her woeful record in government.

"Hopefully this will end the Scottish Government’s constitutional obsession and they’ll finally get back to the day job." Cllr Sandy Keith

Responding to the Supreme Court’s decision, Moray Council Labour Leader Sandy Keith said:

“I welcome the clarity that this ruling brings. Hopefully this will end the Scottish Government’s constitutional obsession and they’ll finally get back to the day job. The NHS is in crisis, we’re facing our first national teachers strike in 40 years, and yet-more local services are facing severe cuts. This should be the focus of any government.”

“I believe some campaign groups plan on taking to the streets today. While I understand that many of them may be unhappy at having been marched to the top of the hill by the Nicola Sturgeon, I hope the First Minister will urge her supporters to behave in a peaceful and respectful manner.”

Commenting on Nicola Sturgeon’s plans to fight the next election solely on the question of independence, Councillor Keith said:

“Labour will fight the next election on policies to make Scotland and the U.K. fairer, happier, and more prosperous. The nationalists can fight it on any platform they want.”
