Highlands & Islands (Labour) MSP Rhoda Grant has asked the Scottish Government what support they are giving if any, to Moray Council to help clear up after two weeks of sand storms in the area.

In an oral Parliamentary question , she asked :

“After two weeks of sandstorms in Moray which caused travel chaos and closed many roads, is the Scottish Government providing any additional support to Moray Council to help with the clear up? Especially the clearing of drains and gullies, which are now blocked. Given that the weather forecast for the next few days is persistent rain would the Government agree that clearing drains and gullies is a priority to prevent flooding?

“I understand that these storms were the worst for 40 years and many roads were closed.

“Although these roads are now open I am advised that drains and gullies throughout the area are blocked and with heavy rain forecast, there is every likelihood that there could be flooding”.

She continued “If Moray Council require assistance now to clear drains and gullies, I hope this will be provided.”

Moray Labour Communities Spokesman Cllr Barry Jarvis said:

“I welcome Rhoda’s intervention on this matter, she has correctly highlighted that this freak occurrence can and no doubt will have a direct knock on effect on Moray Councils revenue budget. The Scottish Government needs to act now to give some financial assistance to prevent this burden falling directly on Moray taxpayers who are already feeling the impact of reductions in Council funding.”
