The SNP Scottish Government has cut council budgets FOUR TIMES more than its own.

As Moray Council prepares to set its budget for the forthcoming year, local residents are bracing themselves for swingeing cuts to services.

After the shambles of the Tory-Independent administration resigning earlier in 2018, the SNP are now charged with putting together a budget. While the SNP are quick to blame everyone else for the cuts to services – research from the independent Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) has revealed the true culprits for the cuts to local services – the SNP Government in Edinburgh.

Research from SPICe shows that while The Scottish Government’s own revenue budget has decreased by 1.8% in the past five years – for which the Tories are largely to blame – the Scottish Government has slashed spending on local government by 7.1%. This means that the SNP Government in Edinburgh has cut budgets to local government at almost FOUR TIMES the rate of their own.

Labour leader on the Moray Council, John Divers, has called on the leadership of the Moray Council to go back to Finance Secretary, Derek McKay, and demand a fairer deal. John said “there’s no difference between the Tories and the SNP. Whenever there are cuts to be made, it’s always local services that suffer most. Unless the Council leadership stands up to the Government in Edinburgh then the cuts we’ve seen so far will seem like a drop in the ocean, and the SNP will have no one to blame but themselves.”
